My current work is exploring the notion of simple forms carrying complex potential. Objects have their set places within our lives, they have pre-assigned roles which they rarely stray from their specific uses. I want the things I make to be removed from these pre-assigned roles, in turn creating a liminal space where other possibilities can be played out. My practise has developed into a series of constant making and re-making of a round form, which once took its reference from an elastic band/hairband but has now been freed from that prior actuality to become a motif in its own right. I am interested in the in-between status of things where they could be interpreted differently depending on how one sees them.
The context, knowledge and information an object embodies speak to us from its surface. I am exploiting that through use of various surfaces. The materials I use are seemingly provisional and I don’t restrict myself to the use of just one material, but use many, as I want to imitate the visual field we traverse daily. I use familiar yet obscure forms that give an indication to something we know. They allude to something without being anything in particular. The work becomes cartoon like and at times surreal
